5personal savoury pies
1whole savoury pies
3personal sweet pies

Why this number

  1. 20 guests at 0.6 portions each for a snack alongside other food, plus a 10% buffer, gives 14 portions.
  2. 20% of those go to sweet pies: 3 sweet portions and 11 savoury portions.
  3. A whole pie cuts into 6 snack-size slices, so 1 whole pie cover 6 portions (about 70% of the savoury share).
  4. 5 personal pies cover the rest. They suit late arrivals, takeaways and anyone who prefers their own pie.
  5. With only 3 sweet portions, individual sweet pies or tarts are easier than a whole pie.
Plan when to order
The rules of thumb behind the numbers
  • One personal pie is one portion. Personal pies are sized to feed one person.
  • A whole pie feeds 4 to 6. We cut it into 4 slices when pies are the meal and 6 when they are a snack.
  • Portions per guest: 1.5 for a meal of pies alone, 1 for a meal with other dishes, 1 for a pies-only snack, and 0.6 for a snack alongside other food.
  • Add 10% for second helpings and the guest who arrives with a friend.
  • Above 6 guests, whole pies cover about 70% of the savoury share (better value, less packaging) and personal pies cover the rest.
  • Sweet pies are cut into 8 slices, because a dessert slice is smaller than a savoury one. Four or fewer sweet portions means buying individual sweet pies instead.

The Don Pie shops, all five of them

Don Pie is the chicken pie of Chef Don Lim, founder of the original Don Pie shop and co-founder of Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab in Jalan Besar. The kitchen bakes the pies today under the DonChef name, and they are sold there and at four mall kiosks. The brand calls it "Singapore's original Chicken Pie, since 1983".

  • DonChef's original recipe, dated by the brand to 1983, with chunky chicken, potato, vegetables and half a hard-boiled egg.
  • No pork, no lard. Not Halal-certified.
  • No Toa Payoh shop today. Where to go instead.

Hours as of October 2026 from the bakery's own outlet list. Kiosks may close earlier if they sell out, so check before you go. To buy online, read how to order from Don Pie, step by step.

Not sure which pies to get?

Chicken pies please almost everyone. Beyond that, the right choice depends on the occasion, the eaters and the oven you have.

Pie type chooser

Three quick questions, then the pie types that suit your table.

Question 1 of 3What is the occasion?
Question 2 of 3Who is eating?
Question 3 of 3What can you reheat with?
Quick rules if you would rather skip the questions
  • Office and meetings: personal chicken pies, plus a few vegetarian ones, labelled.
  • Parties and birthdays: whole chicken pies for the table, personal pies for grazing, and one sweet pie as the dessert.
  • Family dinners and festive meals: shepherd's pie trays or beef pies, which need an oven to reheat well.
  • Gifts: whole fruit or sweet pies travel best and need no reheating.
  • Freezer stock: frozen bake-at-home pies.
  • No reheating possible: personal pies eaten within 2 hours of arrival, or sweet pies.

Common questions, answered briefly

What is Don Pie?

Don Pie is the chicken pie of Chef Don Lim, who created the recipe in 1983, founded the Don Pie shop at Far East Square in 2000 and later co-founded Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab. Today that kitchen bakes the pies under the DonChef name at 39 Tyrwhitt Road in Jalan Besar, and they are sold there and at four takeaway kiosks.

Who is DonChef?

DonChef is the name Chicken Pie Kitchen & Don Signature Crab bakes under today. Every pie that leaves the kitchen is a DonChef pie, made to the original recipe that Don Pie founder and kitchen co-founder Chef Don Lim created in 1983. Chef Don Lim still appears at the kitchen's events.

Where are the Don Pie shops?

As of October 2026 there are five: the Tyrwhitt Road flagship in Jalan Besar, and takeaway kiosks at AMK Hub, Wisma Atria, White Sands in Pasir Ris and Tiong Bahru Plaza. See the Don Pie shop guide for addresses and hours, and check before you go.

Is there a Don Pie shop in Toa Payoh?

No. Chef Don's Toa Payoh stalls have closed. The nearest current outlets are the AMK Hub kiosk, three MRT stops north on the North-South Line, and the Tyrwhitt Road flagship. Details are on our Toa Payoh page.

How many pies should I order per person?

Plan on one portion per guest for a meal with other food, 1.5 if pies are the whole meal, and about 0.6 for a snack beside other food. A whole pie gives 4 to 6 portions. The party pie calculator does the maths.

Is Don Pie halal?

Don Pie's kitchen uses no pork and no lard, but it is not Halal-certified. If your guests need halal food, choose a seller with its own certification.
